The Heritage Inn International Balloon Festival is back, and if you’ve never been, this is your sign to go! High River will be the place to be from September 25-29, 2024, as dozens of hot air balloons take to the sky in a display that’s nothing short of breathtaking. Honestly, this event is one of my all-time favorites.
Adi and I went a few years ago, and we were absolutely blown away—pun intended. We loved it so much that we’re planning to head back this year. There’s just something magical about watching the balloons float across the sky on a crisp fall day.
Why You Need to Check This Out
The Balloon Glow on Friday, September 27 is what everyone talks about (and for good reason).
Picture this: It’s just after sunset, you’re standing in a field surrounded by giant, colorful balloons that light up like lanterns in the night. You can feel the heat from the burners, hear the blasts as the balloons glow against the dark sky, and it’s a total vibe. You wander around, grabbing a bite from one of the food vendors, listening to the DJ, and just soaking it all in. It’s hard to describe the magic of the moment, but trust me—you’ll leave wanting to do it all over again next year.
Here’s the Lowdown on Balloon Glow:
When: Friday, September 27, 2024, 5 pm - 9 pm
Cost: FREE! No tickets needed
Parking: $20 per vehicle (cash only) for park-and-ride shuttles, or park downtown and walk
Pro Tip: Get there early for parking and to snag a good spot for viewing
Daily Balloon Launches
If you can’t make it to the Balloon Glow, don’t stress! There are daily balloon launches throughout the festival where you can catch the balloons drifting across the sky. Early mornings and evenings are the best times for these flights, and watching them rise against the backdrop of the sunrise or sunset is absolutely stunning.
Things You Should Know Before You Go
Passenger rides are sold out: Unfortunately, if you were hoping to take a ride in one of the balloons, you’re out of luck this year—but the experience from the ground is still 100% worth it.
No pets: The event is loud and packed with people, so pets are a no-go (except for registered service animals).
Food vendors on-site: Grab a snack while you take in the views—there will be plenty of options.
Parking can be tricky: Plan ahead and bring cash for parking, especially if you’re taking the park-and-ride shuttle.
Why It’s Worth It
This isn’t just another fall event. There’s something about seeing these massive, colorful balloons light up the sky that makes you feel like a kid again. It’s not just about the visuals (though they’re stunning)—it’s the whole experience of being surrounded by people, the sounds of the burners, and the overall vibe. If you’re looking for something different to do this fall, this is it.
Adi and I are counting down the days until we can go back, and if you’re heading to High River for the festival, drop me a comment! And of course, don’t forget to tag @WanderingInYYC if you snap any pics — we’d love to see your balloon-filled adventures!
