Hey Calgary,
If you're looking to plan a trip to Johnston Canyon, this is for you!
Nestled in the heart of Banff National Park, Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular hikes in the area—and for good reason. With stunning waterfalls, scenic trails, and a family-friendly atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot for anyone looking to immerse themselves in nature without taking on a strenuous hike. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned visitor, there’s always something special about trekking through Johnston Canyon.
Getting to Johnston Canyon: Roam Transit Route 9
One of the easiest ways to access Johnston Canyon, is by taking Roam Transit Route 9. This convenient route operates daily from May 17th until October 14th, with a weekend-only service continuing in the fall, winter, and spring.
After October 14th, the route runs on Saturdays, Sundays, and Stat Holidays. The fare is incredibly affordable too: just $5 for adults and $2.50 for seniors and youth, with children under 12 riding free.
Using Roam Transit is a stress-free way to avoid parking issues, especially during the busier months. Plus, it's eco-friendly!
The Hike: What to Expect
Distance: 5.5 km round trip to the Upper Falls
Elevation Gain: 201 meters
Duration: 2-3 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Johnston Canyon offers a well-maintained path that takes you along catwalks built into the canyon walls, providing incredible views of Johnston Creek below.
The hike can be done year-round, with each season offering its own unique beauty. In the summer, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and flowing waterfalls, while the winter transforms the canyon into a frozen wonderland with breathtaking ice formations.
Lower Falls
The Lower Falls are the first big attraction on the hike, located about 1.1 km from the trailhead. A bridge takes you directly in front of the falls, and for a closer look, you can even crawl through a small tunnel that brings you face to face with the powerful waterfall (be prepared to get a little wet!).
Upper Falls
Continue your hike for another 1.7 km to reach the Upper Falls, which are a spectacular 30 meters high. There are two main viewing points here: one from a platform at the bottom of the falls and another that hangs over the gorge, offering an impressive top-down view. This section tends to be a bit more crowded, but it’s well worth the trek for the photo ops alone.
Beyond the Falls: Ink Pots
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue your hike past the Upper Falls to the Ink Pots, an additional 3 km from the Upper Falls. These colorful mineral springs bubble to the surface in a picturesque alpine meadow. While the extra hike isn’t for everyone, it’s a peaceful spot for those wanting to extend their journey.
When to Go
Johnston Canyon is accessible year-round, but if you’re visiting during the summer months, you’ll want to arrive early or late to avoid crowds. Weekends can get particularly busy, and parking fills up fast. Alternatively, winter is a quieter time to visit, and the frozen waterfalls offer a magical experience for those willing to brave the cold.
Pro Tip: The best time to visit is either early in the morning or late in the evening during summer to beat the crowds.
Seasonal Road Closures
Keep in mind that from March 1st to June 25th, a portion of the Bow Valley Parkway closes from 8 PM to 8 AM to protect wildlife.
Additionally, there is a pilot program restricting vehicle access between May 1st and June 25th, as well as August 30th to September 30th, to allow for vehicle-free cycling. If you're visiting during these times, you can still access Johnston Canyon via the Castle Junction exit off the Trans-Canada Highway.
How to Get There (Without a Car)
To avoid parking hassles or if you're just looking for a more eco-friendly option, remember that Roam Transit Route 9 is available. It’s a convenient option and runs all year, with daily service during the summer months and weekend service in the off-season.
Final Thoughts
Johnston Canyon is a must-do when visiting Banff. With its breathtaking waterfalls, accessible trails, and stunning scenery, it’s no wonder it’s one of the most visited spots in the area. Just remember to plan ahead, especially during peak season, and take advantage of the Roam Transit Route 9 to make your trip even more convenient. Whether you’re hiking to the Lower or Upper Falls, or continuing on to the Ink Pots, Johnston Canyon offers an unforgettable experience for all ages.
