If you’re looking for an unforgettable dining experience in Banff, look no further than The Grizzly House—the iconic fondue restaurant that has been delighting visitors and locals since 1967. Nestled in the heart of Banff, this unique spot has a rich history, quirky atmosphere, and a menu that promises a taste adventure like no other.

A Taste of the Exotic at The Grizzly House

Walking into The Grizzly House is like stepping back in time. Once Western Canada’s first disco, this space has evolved into a cozy fondue restaurant without losing its eclectic charm.

Think wood-panelled walls, a wood-carved bear, totem poles, and even a mannequin riding a motorcycle! Add to that the non-stop 70s music, and you’ve got a truly memorable vibe.

The Grizzly House is all about interactive dining. Here, you can choose from 14 varieties of fondues, ranging from classic cheese and chocolate to more adventurous options like rattlesnake, shark, and buffalo.

Their sizzling hot rock selections are a must-try, featuring everything from tender Alberta Beef to wild game. And if you’re in the mood for a little extra decadence, start with the Swiss raclette—melted cheese heaven—or the buffalo steak tartar.

And let's not forget about the drinks! The Grizzly House has a wine cellar with over 100 labels, alongside a fantastic selection of beer, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages. So whether you’re cozying up inside or enjoying the views from their outdoor patio, you’ll have the perfect pairing for your meal.

A Must-Visit Dining Destination—But Plan Ahead!

We recently visited The Grizzly House and were blown away by the experience. The food, the ambiance, and the service all lived up to the hype, but here's a word to the wise: reservations are a must! We had to book ours two months in advance and still ended up with just one time slot to choose from. While we were there, we saw several walk-in parties turned away because the restaurant was fully booked. So, if you’re planning a visit (and trust us, you should), make sure to lock in those reservations early!

Is it a splurge? Yes, but it's totally worth it. Depending on how much you order, you can expect to spend around $80-$100+ per person, but that depends on your appetite—and we came hungry! Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want to treat yourself, The Grizzly House offers a dining experience that’s both delicious and uniquely Banff.

A Taste of History

The Grizzly House's journey began in 1967, when founders Barbara and Peter Steiner opened its doors as Western Canada’s first disco. Back then, the food was delivered through a hole in the wall from a neighbouring Chinese restaurant. When the Chinese restaurant closed, the team brought in fondue pots, turning a clever workaround into a signature concept that has stood the test of time.

While the disco era may have faded, The Grizzly House’s fondue tradition remains as popular as ever. Today, it’s not just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Banff’s history—a place where you can enjoy a meal as unique as the town itself.

Why You Should Visit

Whether you're an adventurous foodie looking to try something new or just want to cozy up with a classic cheese fondue, The Grizzly House is a must-visit during your Banff stay. With its one-of-a-kind atmosphere and a menu that blends the familiar with the exotic, it’s a dining experience you won’t soon forget.

So what are you waiting for? Make those reservations and prepare to indulge at The Grizzly House. Trust us—you'll be talking about this one long after the last dip in the fondue pot!
